A Rescue Story
Suzie
”When my Border Collie, Maddie, developed a serious kidney problem and
had to be put to sleep, I swore I would never get another dog” said Al
Careaga, “but one day, when surfing the Internet, I saw the photo of a
Border Collie at the Placer SPCA. I decided to see this dog and found a
small 19-month-old skinny-appearing mutt who acted afraid of her own
shadow. The Placer SPCA rescued her the day before she was scheduled to
be euthanized. The staff told me she was the runt of a litter and had
been terribly abused by both her breeder and the larger dogs. They asked
me more than once “Are you certain you want to adopt this dog”?
During the first two weeks I brought Suzie to the park, we walked
outside the fence so Suzie could watch the activity within. After that
time, I brought her into the park where she would cower under my chair.
This behavior continued for months but as anyone who knows her, she is
now a happy, healthy dog even known to growl at other dogs. Despite her
bad start in life, it has been a wonderful experience to see Suzie
regain her spirit. She is a joy in my life. To those thinking of
adopting a problem dog, which Suzie certainly was, I would say “don t
give up, hang in there, you will be richly rewarded.”
